For my art project, I decided to create a painting about the quantum theory; a theory that is defined as something that cannot be define. It goes against common sense. In resuming it, I would say that everything that surrounds us is not what we think it might be. There are so many things that are still unknown at this moment in our lives.
In order to represent that theory, I decided to create a painting because it was easier for me to explain what I wanted to express. In my art, I wanted to illustrate all the questions I’ve always had about spelling and word meanings. The first question I wanted to explore was: How did people who created words decide for example to put “e” at the word tree instead of “i”. Furthermore, I’ve always asked myself why a tree is called a tree and not a flower. It is with those two questions, I started my project.
The principal idea of my painting is the bowl filled with the 26 letters of the alphabet. Each of the letters is colored with the spectrum light colors. As we know, in the spectrum light colors, red is the color that represents the longer wavelength which means that it travels more slowly. Also, as to the opposite, purple has the shortest wavelength which means that it travels faster. In order to represents those facts, I decided to illustrate the most used letter which is an “e” with purple. Because “e” has a higher frequency of utilization, I thought it would create a perfect link with purple which has the higher wavelength frequency. As the “q” is the less used letter, it is painted with a darker red. Also, when observing my work, we can notice that the letters between “e” and “q” respect the shading of the spectrum light.
Furthermore, the hand over the bowl expresses one of my theories, which I know isn’t true, but that is still linked with my questioning. If it is there, it is because it explains that maybe words have been created from a draw. It is also why, in the tree, there are the letters beginning a word followed by three dots. I wanted to show that we don’t know anything about words and their creation. So in fact, with the draw, maybe the missing letter after the “t,” would have been an “o”.
Discussing the tree, I put it in my art work because I like trees, but also because trees are life; it liberates O2. In my project, when looking at it, it looks like it produces letters instead of O2 or leafs. Perhaps, the produced letters are not matching with the picture. In fact, all together, they form flower instead of tree. When I was drawing this representation, I was thinking about my second question. I also think it represents perfectly the quantum theory, because who really knows if a tree is really a tree. There are no written rules. I must add that my inspiration for the project comes from Magritte’s work.
My last analysis is concerning the sky and the tree that don’t really have any real signification. The only thing that I can add is the fact that for both of them, I used the spectrum light colors. It was important for me to paint the majority of my art work with these colors. I think each object is more related together. It is why the tree is kind of purple instead of brown or gray.
Concluding, my work, it represents things that we have known because we’ve always been living with them, but maybe never asked questions about where they were coming from. When understanding it, people wonder about what is really real. Could we be living in a world that we know nothing about?
