With the second scientific revolution came the discovery of the dual nature of electrons. The double-slit experiment showed that electrons can behave as both a wave and particle. Electrons were put through a screen with two slits in it. The expectation was that it would behave as matter and would show two slit patterns at the back of the screen, but the matter was that it showed an interference pattern as if it were a wave. The interference pattern was also observed when electrons could not have interfered with each other. This discovery did not make since sense to the people who still thought that electrons were suppose to be matter. When the experiment was fix to have machines watch detect the electrons, so to understand the interference pattern happening, the electrons changed and did not continue with the interference pattern but showed two slits. You forgot to mention that
This artwork shows this behavior in its depiction of an electron being investigated. Two people question the electron as to what his true nature is with their question "Now, tell us who you really are". The two cops are confused at who the electron is, either a wave or a partial.
The importance of this artwork is to show human's inability to grapple with the concept of the dual nature of electron. The cops in asking who the electron "really" is, demonstrates this struggle the human mind has with this concept. Many have been trying to cope with this idea, and the best explanation for this is Schrodinger's cat thought experiment. The idea is that if there is a cat in a box, and there is a possibility that a poisonous gas is released that will kill the cat. The moment before the box is open; the cat is both dead and alive. This is a difficult concept for the mind to understand a cat to be both alive and dead, but it is the same with the electron, the electron being both a wave and a partial. With the cops making the electron answer so it can only be one shows they do not understand that the electron is (or can act as) both, they think that it has to be one or the other. The electron is represented as by its symbol, because it drew from the idea of Schrodinger's cat. When the cat is still in the box, you do not know if it is one or the either so it is both. The electron being represented only by a symbol shows that in not knowing if it is a wave or a particle, it remains as both.
This artwork focuses on the ideas of duality, and the mind's capacity to understand this complex phenomenon. It is not an easy task to understand, and this discover completely changed the world and how we not only viewed science but art and philosophy. Objective reality is questioned.
